This traditional Victorian property in Penarth had been extended by a previous owner to create a huge living dining area beyond the large but fairly narrow kitchen. An island with casual seating and a place for cookery books was used to widen the space and create somewhere for the young family to sit whilst food was being prepared. Instead of a range cooker two separate single ovens and a wide gas hob were fitted centrally on the main run, with a double sink to one side and a smaller utility sink to the other. This meant the old utility room, which closed off the entrance to the kitchen could be pushed back to open up the room. A utility cupboard, with matching Shaker doors, was built in its place with room inside for a washing machine, the boiler, heating manifold and additional open storage units. The American fridge freezer, larder and boot room cupboard were all kept together tucked behind the kitchen door to keep the open, airy feel to the room. An unusual honed quartz worktop added interest without dominating the scheme. The shallow recess that was part of the previous building work was the ideal spot for a built-in glazed display cupboard, the ideal depth for storing glasses.
